Patio and Driveway Maintenance

Driveway and Patio Pointing

The benefit of having such a great cleaning system means that your driveway surface can now be stabilised. We do this using a jointing compound and sealed if desired.

What many customers did not realise was just how important the sand or jointing compound is to their driveway and patio. Especially monoblock, paving and patio slabs. Without a jointing compound installed in the joints, there is nothing preventing the blocks from moving. The block is only stuck to the base with mortar or similar adhesive and the weight of a vehicle. Heavy rainfall or even enough foot traffic can cause them to move and cause damage.

Any old soil and dirt left in the joints when the fresh jointing compound is applied will compact and sag down. Over time causing the paving joints to sag down at the surface which is not only unsightly but also creates a depression. This will fill with soil and allow weeds to grow well before the seal fails!

This is why it is so important for us to use a powerful vacuum as part of the cleaning process. We remove ALL of the old soil and jointing compound right to the base of the block. We can then fill the entire depth of the joint with a fresh dry jointing compound. This ensures that any seal applied is absorbed all the way to the base of the joint too. The deeper the sealed joint the better the stabilisation. This guarantees a much better finish to the job which will remain weed free. Leaving it looking great for much longer.

Driveway Sealing and Patio Maintenance

Sealing is the application of a chemical or resin to the surface and joints. It is applied when new or after cleaning and jointing. Sealing is the best way to maintain a clean, weed-free surface for years. It also vastly extends the life of the joints. There a number of seals for each type of surface dependant on your requirements, how you want it to look and budget.

Seals aim to work in several different way:

  • Prevents staining from oil
  • Bonds with the chosen jointing compound to form a hard yet flexible joint. stabilising the block or slab laterally
  • Sealed joint does not allow any plant growth for the lifetime of the seal (up to 5 years)
  • Future maintenance cleaning can be carried out using a garden hose.
  • Prevents loss of jointing compounds from the joints due to wind and rain for the lifetime of the seal.
